Portuguese sociologist Boaventura de Sousa Santos was recently honored by the Instituto dos Advogados Brasileiros (IAB) with the Medalha Luiz Gama, an award that recognizes the achievements of those who stand out in the defense of human rights and social justice.

The ceremony, held in Rio de Janeiro, brought together members of the IAB and prominent academics, who celebrated Boaventura's contribution to critical thinking, the sociology of law, and the valorization of marginalized knowledge. His work on epistemologies of the South, citizen participation, and the fight against inequality have established him as an influential voice in the Latin American debate on law, society, and democracy.
